There is a hidden treasure for seniors located in the heart of Mount Pleasant and it’s called South Bay. Right off Hungry Neck Boulevard, South Bay is a luxury resort-style senior community that has all the bells and whistles.
Come this October, South Bay will be celebrating their sixth anniversary. Two communities form this continuing care retirement campus. The first is South Bay, its independent living community and the second is the Shem Creek Health Center at South Bay.
“As a life plan community, South Bay offers the full continuum of care,” Sean Davis, executive director explained. With South Bay as their independent living community, the Shem Creek Health Center at South Bay provides assisted living, memory care, short-term rehab and skilled nursing care.
The campus is under the renowned leadership of Liberty Healthcare. Liberty Health has been a family-owned operation that can be traced back to the late 1800s. South Bay sits on 27 acres of mixed-use land, which has easy access to all of Mount Pleasant and is only 20 minutes away from downtown Charleston.
“I love being so close to everything. Our location is fantastic and having MUSC right here is so convenient. Everything about moving to South Bay made sense,” said Joyce, a South Bay resident.
With 161 apartments, South Bay provides senior living services to roughly 200 residents. “We reached 100 percent occupancy in December 2022, averaged 98 percent occupancy during the 2023 year and starting this year we are back at 100 percent,” explains Davis. Within three years of operation, South Bay went from grand opening to fully occupied.
As you walk through the halls of South Bay, you will truly see why seniors love living here. Their amenities include an indoor pool and spa, three restaurants, walking trails, a fitness and wellness center, bocce ball, pickleball and croquet courts to name a few. Another unique aspect about South Bay is they are a rental life plan community. The monthly cost includes the apartment home, water, cable, internet, pest control, dining plan, wellness classes, life enrichment activities, 24-hour concierge, weekly housekeeping, maintenance-free living and scheduled transportation. If you factor the cost, South Bay is a great option for seniors. Requirements for admission include independence with activities of daily living and 62 years of age.
“We are fortunate to have an incredibly dedicated team; some of our managers have been here since day one. We love and know our residents, and have truly engaged team members. This is a diverse community with broad backgrounds,” Sean stated.
